Scuttlebutt - September 27

A cancelled international flight coming back home and baggage that spent a couple of extra days in Munich, but none of that took the shine off the thrilling week I had in Stockholm playing with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.

The orchestra musicians! The conductor Ryan Bancroft! The delightful staff and directors. The audience! What a deeply musical and joyful environment! And that's why classical rock stars like Alan Gilbert are there.

Gilbert is the Conductor Laureate of the Royal Stockholm and was the chief conductor in the early 2000's before serving for many years as the principle conductor of The NY Philharmonic. He is now the principle conductor of the NDR in Hamburg, as well as the Stockholm Opera Orchestra and Principle Guest Conductor of Tokyo Metropolitan.

And he's also a very good violinist.

after the concert Thursday night, relaxing in the orchestra lounge with conductor Ryan Bancroft and Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Director Fredrik Andersson, with traditional Swedish hotdogs and beer. Perfect!

This week I'm doing something I almost never do--play a concert in Tennessee. At 3pm this Sunday I'll be performing "Ficciones", the electric violin concerto by Roberto Sierra that I premiered at Lincoln Center last year, with the Bryan Symphony in Cookeville, TN, conducted by Dan Allcott, who is not only a gifted conductor, cellist and educator, but also a Strum Bowing Groove Academy member!

I'll also be doing a 4-hour Strum Bowing workshop with the TN Tech music department on Saturday and performing at a donor event Saturday evening.
