1/26/23 The Tale of the Diesel Whisperer and the Shipping Company

A huge cargo ship loaded with shipping containers was stranded at the dock with engine problems. The freight company representative called a local diesel mechanic to come and fix it.

The mechanic spent a whole day trying one thing after another to get it running and finally had to tell the company that the engine had a major problem and would have to be rebuilt, a process that would delay the shipment by weeks and cost the company millions.

So, the company rep did some more research and found another mechanic. He was supposed to be a miracle worker, but he had to be flown in from across the world and charged $10,000 an hour.

At first, he thought that was ridiculous—there was no way he was ever going to pay anyone that much per hour!

Then he did the math, figured how much it was costing them every hour to sit idle at the dock, and decided to pull the trigger on the diesel whisperer.

They flew him in the next day.

The miracle mechanic went down to the engine room and spent about 5 minutes walking around the huge engine, listening carefully.

Then he went into the control room, walked up to a control panel wall covered with switches, lights and dials, and turned one single dial.

The engine sprang back to life!

“You’re all set! Good to go! That’ll be $10,000. 1 hour minimum.”

“$10,000! But you were only here 5 minutes! I could have turned that dial myself!”

“Yes,” said the mechanic, “but did you know which one?”

Sometimes just a little expert advice is all you need. So, don’t leave yourself sitting idle at the dock when you need to get somewhere. Time is money. Don’t waste yours!

Groove on!
